Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, is a city that seamlessly blends ancient traditions with modern amenities. To truly experience the essence of this fascinating city, we spoke to a few locals who shared their perspectives, traditions, and recommendations.
Meeting Local Resident, Amina
Amina, a 30-year-old marketing professional, has lived in Baku her entire life. We met her at a cozy café in the old town, where she shared her love for the city and its rich cultural heritage.
"Baku is a city that will surprise you at every turn," Amina said, sipping on a traditional Azerbaijani tea. "From the majestic architecture to the vibrant arts scene, there's always something new to discover."
When asked about her favorite local tradition, Amina's eyes lit up. "Novruz Bayram is our national New Year's celebration, which takes place in March. "Baku is a city that inspires creativity," Gulnara said, as she showcased her latest works. "From the majestic Caspian Sea to the snow-capped mountains, the landscape is a constant source of inspiration for me."
Gulnara recommends exploring the city's thriving arts scene, which includes numerous galleries and museums. She also suggests visiting the famous Baku Boulevard, a scenic pedestrian promenade that runs along the Caspian Sea.
"In the evenings, the boulevard comes alive with street performers, musicians, and food vendors," Gulnara said. "It's the perfect place to experience the city's vibrant energy."
Talking to Fikrat, a Baku Taxi Driver
Fikrat, a taxi driver, has been navigating Baku's streets for over a decade. We spoke to him as he took us on a tour of the city's hidden gems.
"Baku is a city of contrasts," Fikrat said, as we wound our way through the city's narrow streets. "From the modern skyscrapers to the ancient architectural gems, there's something for everyone here."
Fikrat recommends taking a taxi tour of the city to discover its lesser-known attractions, such as the atmospheric Old Town and the picturesque Philharmonic Garden. He also suggests trying local street food, such as kebabs and paklava (a sweet pastry).
"Baku is a city that will leave you with unforgettable memories," Fikrat said, as we concluded our tour. "Come with an open heart and mind, and you'll fall in love with this enchanting city."
